Fenton Court
Motel is conveniently located in Rotorua on Fenton Street, the main street into town and is a short
walking distance to restaurants, shopping and local attractions.
The world renowned Redwood Forest is just down the road, within easy walking or bicycling distance from the Motel. Fenton Court Motel is also one of the closest motels to The Rotorua Racecourse and 3 blocks from the bmx track and golf course.
The "Redwoods" area is Rotorua's playground for runners, walkers, hikers and mountain bikers. The Redwood forest is on the doorstep of Rotorua, and backs onto the Whakarewarewa thermal reserve and Whakarewarewa forest areas, access to the many walking, hiking and mountain bike tracks is free. A variety of walking, running and mountain biking tracks are available to suit all ages and levels of fitness.
Some popular walks are:
The pram track (a walking track suitable for those with pushchairs or wheelchairs) which meanders through the 60m tall Californian Coastal Redwoods - aprox. 30 minutes return.
The Waitawa Walk (Easy walking, 1 hour return), a relaxing and educational walk with a nature trail where many trees and plants are identified.
The Quarry Lookout Track (Moderate walking, 1.5hrs return). This track leads to a great view over the redwoods and Lake Rotorua.
The
Pohaturoa Track (Steep climb, 2hrs return). Takes in superb views of the city and Lake Rotorua, Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve and the Waipa Sawmill.
These are just a few of the many tracks and trails, through to rugged uphill mountain biking tracks.
There are a number of entry points to the forest, the main ones being the Redwood Visitor & Information Centre, situated on Longmile Road, off Tarawera Road (access to trails for runners and walkers), or further down Longmile Road is the Redwoods carpark (access to trails for all users). The main mountain biking entrance and car park is 2km from Rotorua town centre on Waipa Mill road (turn left off State Highway 5) for access to mountain biking trails.
There are many tracks contained within the area (known as the Tokorangi Triangle). The tracks on the perimeter of the triangle cover a distance of about 30 kilometres, but the total distance of the various tracks within the Triangle would probably cover more than 200 kilometres (the Triangle has an area of 288 hectares). Apart from Eight Mile Gate Road that runs through the centre of the Triangle (this is a sealed forest roadway used by logging trucks to access the Waipa mill from the south), all roads are gravel or dirt tracks. There is an area of narrow tracks mainly in one sector (accessed from the Waipa Mill side. These are used by mountain bikers seeking a few thrills - these are known as singles tracks and are wide enough for one bike only at a time (hence the name singles).
There are multiple uses of the forest tracks and in the interests of safety, runners and walkers should avoid using these singles tracks. Further, the Triangle is a working forest and while the area is usually very tranquil and devoid of vehicles, forestry vehicles could be on the tracks at any time. Therefore use the tracks with care (and remain alert at all times), and when you do come across areas that restrict access (because of forestry operations), respect those restrictions - they are put in place in the interest of safety for both the forest workers and the recreational users of the forest. Please observe any fire bans, exercise care with matches and cigarettes and leave only footprints in our forest.
Rotorua City Walks Varied sections of walkway around Rotorua take in areas of historical, cultural, scenic and
scientific interest. Much of the landscape in Kuirau Park and along the Motutara and Te
Arikiroa sections of lakeside walk has been shaped by geothermal activity. The entire
Rotorua City Walkway measures 26km, broken into eight shorter sections.
The Cateye Moonride is always held on the second weekend in May and there are 2 event options - for 12 or 24 hour events. There are limits to the number of entrants, so book your team's accomodation and event registration early.
When you stay at Fenton Court Motel you are close to the action, with the advantage of secure storage facilities for your bikes and relaxing spa pools or spa baths for after the event.
